Rafi's Salads

Salads act as a refreshing counterpoint to the rich flavours of Indian food. In India, it’s very common to be served a green salad, which contains sliced vegetables like cucumber, tomatoes, onion, carrot and sometimes chilli and lemon wedges. These salads aren’t flashy, they use ingredients in their simplest form to balance the flavours of your meal while cleansing your palate.

Here we are going to share our favourite Indian inspired salads which you can make at home using our Spice Mixes and Recipes.

  1. Kachoombar (Chopped Indian Salad)

This is our more elaborate version of the green salad, which we’ve added spices, lemon juice, chilli and a garnish to. We recommend brightening up your salad by adding a mixture of vibrant, colourful vegetables. Peppers, radish, cucumber and red onion would create a salad full of different colours, textures and flavours.

  1. Carrot Salad

A simple salad recipe which only uses our Carrot Salad Spice Mix and 4 ingredients: carrots, lemon juice, coriander and oil (for frying spices). This is great for serving alongside one of our Curry Packs to add a fresh contrast to your meal. The Carrot Salad can also be used as a salad filling for wraps, pittas and burgers.

  1. Bombay Potato Salad

A Rafi's twist on the popular potato salad. Use our most popular side dish - The Bombay Potato Spice Mix to knock this salad up for picnics, BBQs or to have at the ready. This is another Spice Mix which shows the versatility of our Curry Packs and can be served with Indian food and other meals.

  1. Red Cabbage Slaw

Similar to the Carrot Salad in its cooking method this is another one to serve alongside your curry or in pittas, burgers or wraps. Using 5 ingredients, this simple slaw is great for making up and keeping in the fridge to grab when needed. Our Red Cabbage Slaw Spice Mix was created by Rafi’s son, Lee, who added this Spice Mix to the menu after making it at a cooking demonstration. The crowd couldn't get enough of it, so we knew we had to share the recipe.

  1. Chickpea Chaat

This crunchy, sweet and savoury salad uses an array of spices and vegetables with our Tamarind Chutney and Tikha Sev. Serve alongside other dishes to give a delicious contrast in texture and flavours. It can also be served alongside grilled meat, and can be easily customised by including different veggies.

  1. Cucumber, Moong Dal & Coconut Salad

This nutty, sweet yet savoury Spice Mix is commonly known as Kosambari/Koshambari or Kosambari Salad of South India. Kosambari is a refreshing salad made with finely chopped vegetables, coconut and soaked lentils. Rafi’s son, Lee brought this recipe back from his travels to South India and created a mix that shows off the simplicity of this humble salad.

We’d love to hear if these tips have helped you in the kitchen. Let us know your feedback on our Facebook, Instagram and TikTok. We love to see your curry creations, so please send us your foodie photos across!
